This book focuses on the migration of undocumented minors arriving
recently to the United States and the European Union, flows that
are often labeled ‘undocumented’, ‘illegal’, or
‘irregular’ and due to their sudden increase, they have been
described in the media, policy circles, and scholarly work as a
‘surge’ or a ‘crisis’. Leading scholars examine the
intricacies of the contexts that these minors encounter in the
localities where they arrive, including the legal and ethical
frameworks for protecting unaccompanied minors, governmental
decisions about the ‘best interests’ of the children, these
minors’ expressions of their own best interests or agency as they
navigate immigration and social service systems, conditions in
detention centers, and the health and social service needs in
receiving communities. Though definitions and techniques for
counting unaccompanied migrant minors differ between the U.S. and
the EU, this book underscores the immigrant minors’ common
vulnerabilities and strategies they adopt to protect themselves and
improve their circumstances. At the same time, contributors to the
volume highlight common challenges that both European and U.S.
governments face as they develop policy strategies and legal
mechanisms to attempt to balance the best interests of these
children with national interests of the countries in which they
settle. The chapters in this book were originally published as a
special issue of the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies.
This volume brings together international experts to provide fresh
perspectives on geopolitical concerns in the South China Sea. The
book considers the interests and security strategies of each of the
nations with a claim to ownership and jurisdiction in the Sea.
Examining contexts including the region's natural resources and
China's behaviour, the book also assesses the motivations and
approaches of other states in Asia and further afield. This is an
accessible, even-handed and comprehensive examination of current
and future rivalries and challenges in one of the most
strategically important and militarized maritime regions of the
world.
This volume will act as a guide through the various aspects of
quantum mechanics. It not only covers the basics but also addresses
new themes developed in the field of quantum mechanics in recent
years. These include quantum mechanics in relation to electronics,
quantum dots, spintronics, cryptography, and other more theoretical
aspects, such as the path integral formulation and supersymmetric
quantum mechanics. The volume presents a number of mathematical
tools and physical consequences derived from quantum mechanics. The
starting point of the volume is a very brief review of the
phenomenology associated with the origins of quantum theory, as the
branch of science was understood in the beginning of the 20th
century, leading to an interpretation of the results at that time.
Key features: * Provides understanding and demystification of the
quantum theory * Presents applications to information theory and
encryption * Introduces applications to medicine, in both treatment
and diagnosis * Covers applications to modern communications
systems * Looks at the philosophical implications of quantum
mechanics, its reality, and its perception * Describes the
application to the basics of solid state devices
How ordinary Americans, frustrated by the legal and political
wrangling over the Second Amendment, can fight for reforms that
will both respect gun owners’ rights and reduce gun violence.
Efforts to reduce gun violence in the United States face formidable
political and constitutional barriers. Legislation that would ban
or broadly restrict firearms runs afoul of the Supreme Court’s
current interpretation of the Second Amendment. And gun rights
advocates have joined a politically savvy firearms industry in a
powerful coalition that stymies reform. Ian Ayres and Fredrick Vars
suggest a new way forward. We can decrease the number of gun
deaths, they argue, by empowering individual citizens to choose
common-sense gun reforms for themselves. Rather than ask
politicians to impose one-size-fits-all rules, we can harness a
libertarian approach—one that respects and expands individual
freedom and personal choice—to combat the scourge of gun
violence. Ayres and Vars identify ten policies that can be
immediately adopted at the state level to reduce the number of
gun-related deaths without affecting the rights of gun owners. For
example, Donna’s Law, a voluntary program whereby individuals can
choose to restrict their ability to purchase or possess firearms,
can significantly decrease suicide rates. Amending red flag
statutes, which allow judges to restrict access to guns when an
individual has shown evidence of dangerousness, can give police
flexible and effective tools to keep people safe. Encouraging the
use of unlawful possession petitions can help communities remove
guns from more than a million Americans who are legally
disqualified from owning them. By embracing these and other new
forms of decentralized gun control, the United States can move past
partisan gridlock and save lives now.
This volume focuses on recent experiences of return migration to
Mexico and Central America from the United States. For most of the
twentieth century, return migration to the US was a normal part of
the migration process from Mexico and Central America, typically
resulting in the eventual permanent settlement of migrants in the
US. In recent years, however, such migration has become
involuntary, as a growing proportion of return migration is taking
place through formal orders of deportation. This book discusses
return migration to Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras,
addressing different reasons for return, whether voluntary or
involuntary, and highlighting the unique challenges faced by
returnees to each region. Particular emphasis is placed on the lack
of government and institutional policies in place for returning
migrants who wish to attain work, training, or shelter in their
home countries. Finally, the authors take a look at the phenomenon
of migrants who can never return because they have disappeared
during the migration process. Through its multinational focus,
diverse thematic outlook, and use of ethnographic and survey
methods, this volume provides an original contribution to the topic
of return migration and broadens the scope of the literature
currently available. As such, this book will be important to
scholars and students interested in immigration policy and Latin
America as well as policy makers and activists.
There has been much attention paid to the idea of Smart
Cities as researchers have sought to define and
characterize the main aspects of the concept, including
the role of creative industries in urban growth, the
importance of social capital in urban development, and the role of
urban sustainability. This book develops a critical view of
the Smart City concept, the incentives and role of governments in
promoting the development of Smart Cities and the analysis of
experiences of e-government projects addressed to enhance Smart
Cities. This book further analyzes the perceptions of
stakeholders, such as public managers or politicians, regarding the
incentives and role of governments in Smart Cities and the critical
analysis of e-government projects to promote Smart Cities’
development, making the book valuable to academics, researchers,
policy-makers, public managers, international organizations and
technical experts in understanding the role of government to
enhance Smart Cities’ projects.
As one of the fastest growing sectors of the economy since the 1950's, tourism has proved to be a complicated phenomenon, unlike any other economic producer. Over the last few decades, tourism has exerted increasing pressure on the land and negative social, environmental and economic impacts have surfaced as major issues. Positive guidelines for better planning are in demand by developers and designers who need new understandings of the breadth of tourism's complexity for their own success.
Tourism Planning has long been considered the seminal work on tourism development. It provides a comprehensive, integrated overview of all aspects of tourism and the planning functions that accompany it, emphasizing concepts and principles for better planning. The revised and updated fourth edition contains enhanced discussions of the role of communities immediately surrounding the sites using newer tourism cases as examples. Issues that have increased in importance in recent years are also discussed in depth including transportation glut, resource erosion and sprawl and sustainable development.
Handbook of Bioremediation: Physiological, Molecular and
Biotechnological Interventions discusses the mechanisms of
responding to inorganic and organic pollutants in the environment
using different approaches of phytoremediation and bioremediation.
Part One focuses specifically on inorganic pollutants and the use
of techniques such as metallothionein-assisted remediation,
phytoextraction and genetic manipulation. Part Two covers organic
pollutants and consider topics such as plant enzymes, antioxidant
defense systems and the remediation mechanisms of different plant
species. This comprehensive volume is a must-read for researchers
interested in plant science, agriculture, soil science and
environmental science. The techniques covered in this book will
ensure scientists have the knowledge to practice effective
bioremediation techniques themselves.

This unusual art activity book featuring the Indian elephant
introduces children to a variety of Indian art traditions. The
elephant is imagined and rendered in eight different folk and
tribal styles. Through tracing, patterning and coloring the
elephants, the child can immerse herself in detailed exploration of
styles - or just have fun. Older children will begin to understand
that art is as much about the imagination as it is about depiction.

Galileo and Kepler dreamed of the possibility of space exploration,
although its reality was later underappreciated and even challenged
by social, ideological, and scientific critics as a diversion from
our problems on Earth. The Dimming of Starlight tells the
fascinating stories of how space exploration places us in unusual
situations that force us to come up with new ideas about nature.
This strong connection between scientific exploration and
scientific change makes us aware of a new panorama of problems,
dangers, and opportunities that leads to new solutions and
technologies that would have been unimaginable under old
perspectives. Thus, the exploration of Venus led to the discovery
of the destruction of Earth's Ozone layer. This discovery will save
hundreds of millions of lives in the coming centuries. As we
explore space, we learn to protect our planet from catastrophe, and
all the while we change drastically our ideas about the nature of
the universe. With its account of serendipity and splendor, the
book invites readers on an exciting journey in which, step by step,
we are shown the crucial importance of space exploration for
humanity.
Marking the fiftieth anniversary of two of the most influential
books in modern educational and social theory, Rethinking Freire
and Illich introduces readers to the results of the symposium of
Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed and Ivan Illich’s
Deschooling Society. The collection uniquely analyses Freire and
Illich together, although not in a comparative way. It acknowledges
that both Freire and Illich led in different ways to a new approach
to perceiving and understanding the concept of liberation as a
human condition, while also presenting current criticisms of their
work from a gendered perspective and by Indigenous scholars in the
US and Canada. Drawing on contributions from historians of
education, theologians, digital experts, and philosophers of
education, the book offers a historical analysis using extensive
primary sources and an originality of topics. It introduces the
ways in which the current generation reads the overall works of
Freire and Illich in the search for a reconstructed democratic
education. As a result, Rethinking Freire and Illich presents
Freire and Illich in light of contemporary issues in this
generation, and offers renewed searches for a good and just life
and a reconstructed democratic education.
